Widdershin happens to all under the 'not really evil' villians. At least he does to me. Villians usually act in a way for personal gain, and although it first appears that he is acting for the sake of himself, in truth he is not. I found a child-like desire hidden deep within Widdershin that touched me and made it hard to see him as a bad guy.
Now I hope to sway your opinion, if you are thinking wtf? duh of course he's a baddie!. Call me a perpetual devil's advocate, but out of all the characters, I like Widdy the best. Sorry Senel.
